Hi Patrick

You are absolutely right. Thinking about it further, not only is this a personal problem but also an organisational problem. The knock-on effect of the destruction of motivation and desire to do that little bit extra is higher levels of unplanned leave and higher staff turnover (along with lower employee performance). Very costly and very destructive.

It is especially related to the frontline managers because they are the managers who are speaking to and dealing with the employee on a daily basis - one bad manager who you see every day is enough to destroy all motivation and desire to do that little bit extra.

I would love to think that I use open ended questions all of the time, every time and pause long enough for people to answer but, in reality, I know that I don't.
I can never get enough of articles like this one as it is a reminder to myself to ensure that I get the best out of people.

Thanks

Thanks Henny. It's been a while since I've made this post. I can report that the group I cycle with now stops at every red light and deliberately models good road behaviour when out and about.

Robyn and Morgan, thanks for your comments. I am proud of my brother. And at the same time, like Wayne, I wish to acknowledge the many, many selfless act of all the other heroes. Wayne has done a better job than me at describing who some of those people are and what they're contributing. Thanks Wayne.

What a wonderful story Blair - thanks so much for sharing about Craig and reminding us of the quiet heroes. We are very fortunate that so many people have courageously stepped forward to help others. Underneath the tragedy it has certainly been a truely inspiring and humbling experience.
